The narrative of Janiyah, a single mother going through a very difficult period, is told in Straw (2025). Taraji P. Henson portrays her. The film illustrates how difficult life may be when you have little money and everything seems to go against you. Janiyah has a hard time maintaining a roof over her head, providing for Aria, and keeping a job.

Janiyah receives an eviction notice from her landlord when she first wakes up. Because she is unable to afford lunch, her daughter Aria is being teased at school. Janiyah promises to find the money, but she runs into more issues at her place of employment. She is terminated by her employer, and she does not receive her last payment immediately.

Janiyah doesn't have identification with her when she attempts to deposit her check at the bank. In order to obtain the funds she needs, she loses her cool and holds folks captive at the bank. Raymond, a black single mother who is also a detective, attempts to defuse the situation since she is aware of Janiyah's difficulties.

Janiyah receives a terrible phone call while being held hostage. She finds out that Aria passed away the day before. The reason for Janiyah's daydreaming about her daughter throughout the day is now clear. Despite the shock, Nicole, the bank manager, and Detective Raymond help her to relax.

Detective Raymond ensures that Janiyah is protected when the FBI arrives prepared to attack the bank. Nicole helps Janiyah, and they work together to help her surrender in peace.

And did Janiyah live? She certainly does. She is still alive, however, despite her arrest by the FBI. People outside the bank demonstrate their support for her, demonstrating that many view her as a victim of unfortunate circumstances rather than a perpetrator.

The conclusion is depressing yet optimistic. Janiyah comes to terms with the repercussions, but she also finds solace in knowing she's not alone. The film serves as a reminder to be compassionate and understanding by highlighting the difficult circumstances that some people experience.
