Sekhar Kammula Explains the Authentic Intent Behind Kuberaa’s Pan-Indian Release Across Languages

The movie Kuberaa, directed by Sekhar Kammula, was released in Tamil and Telugu a few weeks ago. The movie depicts the cat-and-mouse game between a beggar and a man who has been sold into the capitalist world and is attempting to pull off a financial scheme. It stars Dhanush, Nagarjuna, Rashmika Mandanna, and Jim Sarbh, among others.

Sekhar Kammula describes his frame of mind by saying, "Kuberaa is a completely different film for the pan-Indian audience that they haven't seen, and so far it's been good days." It's a plot that even Telugu viewers haven't seen before. It's a nice success in Telugu, and I'm hoping to hear more positive news in Tamil via word of mouth."

Interview with Sekhar Kammula about Kuberaa:

Sekhar Kammula, who feels strongly that filmmaking is an art form rather than a profession, discusses the inner struggle he experiences when working in the entertainment industry. "I've made a deliberate choice to do this. The audience fortunately gave me the room. I have been fortunate that the audience has embraced me in my 25th year and tenth picture in the way that I present my tales in their genuine form, free of commercial cliches and masala components. I try to stop myself from doing it, and others expect the same from me.

The director claimed that despite his fame for movies like Happy Days, he also makes sure that his flicks are financially successful. Sekhar Kammula states that he treads the path that prevented his films from being a "commercial failure". "Kuberaa is also a big-budget, all-star cast picture, so we wanted to go pan-Indian in order to reach a larger audience." The tale must be compelling enough to tell, and I spend a lot of time working on it. It takes a lot of time, maybe six to seven months, to select a location.

Sekhar Kammula takes his cast of celebrities in Kuberaa, which includes Dhanush, Nagarjuna, Rashmika, and others, and portrays them solely as Deva, Deepak, and Sameera, respectively. According to the filmmaker, he remains loyal to the plot, and the same is true of the narration. "That's how I approached Dhanush, and he immediately agreed. I gave them the story, and by giving up, they gave me complete freedom. The beggar is helpless throughout the film due to a deliberate choice.

"I couldn't picture anyone other than Dhanush playing the part."

Sekhar ended the second half with Kuberaa, then pitched to Dhanush, and after the actor approved, the final act was written. "I could not see anyone else but Dhanush playing this role, and so it is for Nagarjuna. I wanted the story to be the hero, and Dhanush as protagonist." The director also lauds Dhanush's outstanding acting and says that he was completely blown away by him. "I think it is a proud moment, and I hope it catches on in Tamil."

The director said that the challenge lies in further examining the characterizations and how Nagarjuna's character fits into the gray area. “Nagarjuna represents the middle-class, whereas Jim Sarbh represents the richest of the rich and Dhanush is poorest of the poor. Often, the middle class experiences the gray areas as they seek instant satisfaction and occasionally pray for forgiveness. This is a decision to prioritize simplicity in one's life. I attempted to portray that reality," he continues.

According to Sekhar Kammula, if the movie had a Telugu protagonist, Kuberaa would not have been different. "The multi-language and pan-Indian thing were not planned or was a marketing ploy. I have a comfortable space in Telugu, and this was very organic in the way the film's casting and making is. With the universal thought, language is not a barrier since capitalism is everywhere.

Sekhar Kammula claims that he takes time to relax between projects, as he is waiting to see if the film picks up in Tamil. "We have shot in two languages, and because of some miscommunication, some assume it is a dubbed film.
