There are certain expectations that audiences have in a film by director MansoRe, who is known to make serious social dramas like Harivu, Nathicharami, Act 1978 and 19.20.21. His next, Doora Theera Yaana, though, comes across as a marked departure from his usual style of filmmaking. It’s more colourful and flamboyant in its presentation. Is he going to disappoint his core audience? “No way. I have not entirely given up on my ethics and am not contemplating career suicide. Doora Theera Yaana has something for audiences who are used to my kind of cinema,” says MansoRe.

Like his earlier films, Doora Theera Yaana will also be high on ‘content and concern’ and is socially-relevant as well. “The narrative pattern has changed and is not in the previous format, especially in terms of colouring. If you notice, Act 1978 and 19.20.21 have a ‘moody’ feel to them with the colour palette. Doora Theera Yaana is far more colourful, if compared,” he says.

The filmmaker adds that earlier, his films didn’t have songs, in the sense that there would be songs playing in the background, but they were always part of the narrative and helped with story progression. “You couldn’t really separate it from the rest of the content. Here, the songs are a part of the story, but you will also experience them like stand-alone elements, because they have been treated in a more popular style,” MansoRe explains.

The filmmaker admits that he has no idea if this experiment will work out or not, but he has tried to switch up the flavour of cinema in the hope of making a wider cross-section of audiences happy. “In the end, I want my audience to walk out and say that I have not given up on my ethics, and the newer audience to say that they were not bored with a neat, engaging and entertaining story. I am trying to straddle two boats with this film,” he says.
