Laya Returns: Seizing Rare Chances in Telugu Films After Her US Stint
5 months ago | 5 Views
In the early 2000s, Laya was among the biggest celebrities. She lived in the United States after getting married. She makes her return with Nithiin's Thammudu, where she discusses her career, quitting her position in the United States, and now playing character roles.
Why did you return to Telugu movies after so many years?
I was content with my family in the United States. I used to film videos and choreograph entertaining dance routines whenever I had free time. When they became popular in India, I gave several interviews during my brief trip back, saying that I would be happy to make a comeback if I found a decent part. I was secured for the movie after the producers of Thammudu reached out to me and requested a new portfolio, which I sent to them.
Why did you decide to make your return with the movie Thammudu?
The moment I heard the story of Thammudu, I knew it was the ideal comeback I needed. Coming back to films with elegance is a normal process because I used to run the show as a heroine. I said yes to my second innings as soon as I received an offer to portray Nithiin's sister in a Dil Raju film, and now I'm here promoting it.

About your character?
I portray a formidable government figure named Jhansi Kiramayee in Thammudu. The movie's plot revolves around how she deals with problems in a tiny hamlet and how her brother saves her. My battle with the antagonist, Thammudu, along with the siblings' relationship and ego conflicts, provided me with a good platform to demonstrate my acting skills.
Taking a picture after so many years?
I didn't see any change. The only difference was that I took on a character role. The audience's reactions were extreme this time, and the performance had to reach its zenith. Venu, my director, informed me that my character expresses herself through her eyes and says very little. The process was a little difficult, but I really enjoyed creating it. Furthermore, because the advertisements are being conducted on a different level, the exposure is now significantly greater.
Working with the likes of Nithiin?
Our scenes have turned out so beautifully, and Nithiin is such a sweetheart. In this movie, you will see a more mature Nithiin, and his work is one of the main highlights. It was really challenging to film the movie in the woods because the narrative takes place over the course of a single day. During the filming, I and Nithiin even sustained injuries.
How difficult was it to give up your job and life in the United States in order to pursue filmmaking in India?
When I was given this movie, I was busy working in the US, and my children were all grown up. I believed that chances seldom come knocking at one's door, and this was the perfect moment for me to start my second innings. I made up my mind, even though it demanded many sacrifices, and now I'm here.

How are you planning your career ahead in Tollywood?
I am open to character roles now. I’ve been there and done those star-heroine roles, and I’m looking to play important characters. For me, the role should drive the story. Whether it’s a sister or a mother, I have no qualms about playing supporting roles. Whenever I get an offer, I will come back to India and shoot.
Future projects?
As of now, I’m doing a film with senior actor Sivaji. It’s a fun film, and once again, I have a solid role. Though it’s a mature one, I found it quite challenging. Once Thammudu releases, I hope to get more offers and am ready to take on Telugu cinema.
