After much anticipation and speculation surrounding the film's theatrical debut, Tehran, John Abraham's geopolitical action thriller, is apparently hoping for a digital release rather than a theatrical one. Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films produced the film, which is said to have been hosted on the streaming service ZEE5 (OTTplay Premium). Manushi Chhillar also has a key role in the movie.

Last discussions are taking place in anticipation of the ZEE5 premiere

According to Bollywood Hungama, the deal is still in the last stages of negotiation. "In all probability, the film is expected to premiere on ZEE5," the entertainment website was told by the source. "In a week's time or 10 days, a clearer picture on this front will emerge." The news also states that it will be released on OTT on August 15. The date is still uncertain. The producers will publish an official statement once this choice has been made, and it will be made soon.

The action thriller, which Arun Gopalan directed, is based on real events that occurred in Glasgow, Mumbai, and Delhi in 2022. In addition to the rest of the cast, the production team consists of Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films, Sandeep Leyzell of Bake My Cake Films, and Shobhna Yadav.

Why OTT is a better option

"Tehran is a no-nonsense geopolitical thriller that was produced in the style of an international film," said an industry insider, clarifying the film's choice to go directly to digital instead of theaters. They added, "It is not only a Hindi language film, but also has a runtime of under two hours." Some of the conversations are also conducted in Farsi and English in order to preserve authenticity. Therefore, the creators came to the conclusion that the OTT platform would be a better fit.

The fact that this is John Abraham's debut in an OTT original feature film is what makes Tehran stand out. Up until this point, in contrast to many of his contemporaries, the actor had refrained from switching to the digital medium. During the pandemic, his production effort, Sardar Ka Grandson (2021), was launched live on Netflix. Although the movie featured Arjun Kapoor, Rakul Preet Singh, and Neena Gupta, he just made a brief appearance in it.

Numerous delays

Tehran's theatrical debut was initially planned for January 25, 2023. However, that notion was abandoned since Pathaan, a big-budget action movie starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and John himself, debuted on the same day and went on to become a box office hit. There were rumors in 2023 that Tehran would be released in May, but it never happened.

Given recent events, the producers are likely to issue an official announcement soon. The liberation of Tehran may coincide with the OTT release of Indian Independence Day if all goes according to plan.
