Acclaimed actor-filmmaker Dhanush returns to the director’s chair with his much-anticipated project Idli Kadai. The trailer, unveiled recently, gives audiences a heartfelt glimpse into a layered family drama that blends tradition, ambition, betrayal, and resilience. Slated to release on October 1, the film promises to be more than just a story about food – it’s about safeguarding memories, values, and the emotional bonds within a community.

A Tale Rooted in Family and Food

In Idli Kadai, Dhanush stars as Murugan, a son raised around the warmth and simplicity of his father’s beloved idli shack. The modest food joint is not just a place of business but a cherished landmark for locals who’ve tasted its legacy for years. However, Murugan’s aspirations lead him toward hotel management, where he builds his career under mentor-turned-rival Ashwin, played by Arun Vijay.

The trailer beautifully contrasts the values of a family-run food joint against the lure of modern professionalism. While Murugan achieves early success in the hotel industry, the emotional void left behind widens when his father realises the shack is losing its soul without his son’s presence. Speaking at the film’s audio launch, he shared a personal anecdote from his childhood, recalling how he once longed for idlis so much that he would collect flowers in his neighbourhood to earn a few rupees to buy them.

“The satisfaction of eating those idlis back then cannot even be compared to what I experience today,” he admitted, explaining how food and nostalgia inspired him to tell this story. This personal connection to the film is reflected in the emotional texture of the trailer, blending realism with sentimentality.

Release and Expectations

Announced in 2024 as Dhanush’s 52nd film and his fourth directorial venture, Idli Kadai was filmed primarily in Chennai, with certain international portions shot in Thailand. Now set for its theatrical release on October 1, the film will also be released in Telugu under the title Idli Kottu.

With its blend of family drama, values, and cultural pride, Idli Kadai promises to strike an emotional chord with audiences.
