"Finally Dawn" Trailer Unveils a Lavish, Noir-Style Drama in 1950s Rome

Samuel Goldwyn Films has released the first trailer for Finally Dawn, a striking drama set in 1953 Rome. The movie is written and directed by Saverio Costanzo, known for My Brilliant Friend. It paints a vivid picture of the city’s glitz and shadows. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 18, 2025. It features a cast from around the world, including Lily James, Willem Dafoe, Rachel Sennott, Joe Keery, Alba Rohrwacher, Michele Bravi, and newcomer Rebecca Antonaci.
The story centers on Mimosa, played by Antonaci, a humble girl from Rome. Her quiet life changes suddenly when she visits Cinecittà Studios to audition as an extra in a fancy sword-and-sandal movie set in ancient Egypt. What starts as a quick visit turns into an intense, surreal night. This all happens just hours after Italy’s scandalous Wilma Montesi murder, which shocked the upper class.
A key character is Josephine Esperanto, played by Lily James. She’s a fading Hollywood star struggling to stay relevant. She feels threatened by newcomers, especially her co-star Sean Lockwood, played by Joe Keery. Willem Dafoe stars as Rufus Priori, a charming American art dealer and Josephine’s trusted friend. Rufus becomes an unlikely guide through Rome’s glamorous but shady underbelly.
The film mixes history, movie industry satire, and coming-of-age themes. It explores ideas of identity, illusion, and freedom amid Italy’s postwar glow and shadows. With rich visuals and a mood blending Hollywood glamour with European art films, Finally Dawn promises to be both a visual treat and an emotional hit this summer.
