The game of numbers in Bollywood revived last year with a bang when Pathaan alone, in the first quarter itself, contributed Rs 512 crore to the Rs 800 crore that the Hindi film industry managed to churn out at the domestic box office. The year was a bumper year for Hindi cinema as it saw films after films achieving unparalleled success in their respective genres and bringing back a tsunami of audience that theatre owners, distributors, and producers were craving to see throughout the pandemic and even sometime before. However, 2024 started as a good year too, with the first quarter bringing in slightly less than 2023 with a couple of big-ticket releases and majorly small films that earned well.

However, April saw Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Maidaan locking horns in the very initial days and it turns out the movies failed to create little to no dent in the numbers listed above. Made at staggering budgets and with massive stars, the movies that were touted to be trailblazers have struggled to bring in numbers that will help them break even and label themselves as profitable. The latest reports now say that the films have resulted in a Rs 250 crore loss to the Hindi film industry. Read on to know everything you should about the same.

BMCM & Maidaan Lead to a Rs 250 Crore Loss

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan starring Akshay Kumar-Tiger Shroff in the lead and Maidaan starring Ajay Devgn released on the big screen on Eid 2024. The movies bombed within a week and were struggling to even achieve basic milestones. While the Prithviraj Sukumaran starrer struggles in the Rs 60 crore range at the domestic box office a fortnight from its release, the Ajay-led film is still struggling to even touch the Rs 50 crore mark as it stood at Rs 45 crore last. A trade critic, as per Indian Express, called it a very bad phase for Hindi cinema as the industry lost Rs 250 crore on a single Friday, that too on a major release date.

The Budgets

While Bade Miyan Chote Miyan was made at a budget of Rs 350 crore as per reports, Maidaan cost Rs 250 crore in the five years of its making. Both movies were mounted on a massive scale. The same report says that BMCM might get a rebate from the UK government decreasing the losses, but they will still be around Rs 250 crore, which is a massive number.

Bollywood So Far in 2024

While Maidaan and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan have bombed at the box office and have not contributed much, the collection for the first quarter of 2024 stands at a total of Rs 700 crore. With Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone starrer Fighter contributing a decent big chunk, there have been small-time contributors including Yami Gautam-led Article 370, Shahid Kapoor - Kriti Sanon’s Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, Ajay Devgn’s Shaitaan, and more. Even Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies turned out to be a successful venture.
