Arya Salim on the lathicharge moments in Narivetta

The newest Malayalam film starring Tovino Thomas, Narivetta, was released in theaters on May 23, 2025. Critics have given the movie favorable reviews, praising the realistic depiction of the police crackdown on the protesting indigenous population. CK Shanthi, one of the protesters, is played by Arya Salim in a role that is said to be modeled after the activist CK Janu. The movie includes scenes where Arya's character is subjected to the lathi, and the actress claims that even the dummy lathi attack left her with bruises.

I had pads on my body and used a dummy lathi to hit. Even then, the pad would have moved from its location despite all the running and effort. "And all the kicks and beatings would land on the body itself," she said.

Regarding the procedure in greater depth, Arya said that even if the lathi is fake, it would still have a PVC pipe inside to prevent it from breaking.

"There would be blue marks on the body after shooting," she stated, comparing it to those who had experienced the actual baton charge. "If, after getting beaten by a dummy lathi, there are blue marks, then the situation of those beaten with the original lathi would be unbearable," she continued.

Narivetta plot and cast

Police officer Varghese Peter, portrayed by Tovino Thomas, is sent to Wayanad with his crew to deal with the tribal protests there. The indigenous people take over sections of the woods in protest of the state government's failure to give them land, which results in police action. In addition to appearing in Theevandi and Kaanekkaane with Tovino, Suraj Venjaramoodu plays Basheer Ahammed, the head constable, while Tamil actor Cheran is seen as an IPS officer. The female cast includes Priyamvada Krishnan and Arya Salim. Previously, Arya Salim starred alongside Tovino Thomas in Minnal Murali.
