Diljit Dosanjh stars in Detective Sherdil, Z5's latest original movie, which is now available for streaming as of June 20, 2025. After a five-year break, Ali Abbas Zafar, the film's producer, returned to Z5 (OTTplay Premium). With 2020's Khaali Peeli, he made his debut as a producer.

The path of Ali Abbas Zafar as a producer

With the Z5 original Khaali Peeli, which starred Ananya Panday and Ishaan Khatter, Ali Abbas Zafar, who had earlier directed hit films for theaters like Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai, made his digital production debut. When theaters were shuttered by the COVID-19 outbreak, the film debuted as one of the first forays of mainstream audiences into direct-to-digital distribution.

Zafar continued to produce and direct at a consistent pace after that. In 2022, he supervised the filming and production of the historical drama Jogi, which starred Diljit Dosanjh and was about the anti-Sikh riots of 1984. The Netflix original movie received favorable reviews when it debuted because of how carefully it handled the topic.

Bloody Daddy, an action picture starring Shahid Kapoor and directed by Zafar, made its debut on now-JioHotstar in 2023. The high-octane thriller, which was inspired by the French movie "Sleepless Night," gained notoriety for its stylized treatment and digital-first distribution.

With Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff in the cast, Zafar directed the blockbuster action comedy Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, which was released in theaters in 2024. The movie marked his comeback to lavish big-screen productions following a number of streaming releases.

Detective Sherdil's comeback to the OTT is marked by his production of genre-based tales, as opposed to directing or producing high-budget movies. With his comedic-investigative role, Diljit Dosanjh introduces a lighter aspect to Zafar's body of work. In addition to that, it demonstrates that he continues to use digital platforms outside of his theatrical career.

The movie increases his list of production credits while simultaneously showcasing the growing convergence of streaming services and theatrical titles, a trend that is still influencing how films are released throughout the business.
