"A lot of people have digestive changes before or during their period, like bloating, cramps, constipation, or even diarrhea," Dr. Manjusha Goel, the head consultant for the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, told HT Lifestyle in an interview. These symptoms are frequently brought on by hormonal changes that occur naturally during the menstrual cycle, and they are not simply mental.
Hormonal balance and a healthy digestive system:
"Estrogen and progesterone are the main hormones involved. Levels of both hormones decrease in the days preceding menstruation. Although this hormonal change causes uterine contractions that help remove the uterine lining, it also affects gut motility. The hormone-like prostaglandins, which are produced during menstruation, have a significant function. Prostaglandins are essential for initiating uterine contractions, which result in cramps, but they may also affect the gut, resulting in softer bowel motions or even diarrhea. Conversely, increased progesterone levels just before menstruation can cause constipation and bloating by slowing down digestion, according to the gynecologist.

What causes bloating?
"Another prevalent issue is bloating. Hormonal changes can make the body hold onto more water and salt, which might give the stomach a bloated or heavy sensation. In addition, the makeup of gut flora can change slightly throughout the cycle, which has a knock-on effect on gas production and digestion, according to Dr. Manjusha Goel. The doctor also stated that diet has a role. During PMS, cravings for sweet and fatty foods are higher. Overindulging in unhealthy snacks might cause bloating as well.
Suggestions for maintaining a healthy stomach throughout menstruation:
- Maintaining hydration aids in digestion and helps eliminate excess water.
- Eating a high-fiber diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help relieve constipation and lessen bloating.
- Consuming foods high in probiotics, such yogurt, kefir, and fermented vegetables, can help maintain a healthy gut microbiota.
- Ginger or peppermint are examples of herbal teas that might relieve cramps and promote digestion.
- Maintaining regular bowel movements and relieving abdominal pain can be accomplished by engaging in light physical activity.
