Although the majority of brain tumors are benign, some have the potential to be malignant and fatal. Recognizing the early warning signs is essential for accurate diagnosis and successful treatment because they are caused by the abnormal cell growth in the brain.

“Brain tumors, either benign or cancerous, can be highly dangerous to your health if not found early,” stated Dr. Vinit Banga, head of neurology at Faridabad's Fortis Hospital, during an interview with HT Lifestyle. Their symptoms may appear in much less severe ways, allowing them to grow silently. "As the tumor grows, it may squeeze brain tissue, interfere with neurological functions, and impact body systems in subtle or unexpected ways."

Early warning indicators of a brain tumor:

1. Headaches that won't go away, especially those that get worse when you wake up or move around.

2. Mysterious nausea or vomiting: This is especially true when it's accompanied by a headache.

3. Vision issues: Blurry vision, dizziness, or loss of peripheral vision.

4. Issues with balance and coordination: Difficulty walking or stumbling more than twice in a row.

Safety tips for prevention:

Brain tumors can be prevented with the proper dietary habits and way of life. Dr. Vinit Banga offered the following advice for prevention:

Minimize exposure to ionizing radiation: Refrain from getting unnecessary X-rays and CT scans, particularly for kids. When medical necessity necessitates exposure, utilize protective shielding. Exercise caution in areas that emit radiation (such as industrial locations).

Minimize prolonged use of mobile phones: Utilize speakerphone or hands-free gadgets to reduce radiation exposure to the head. Refrain from placing your phone next to your head when you sleep. For lengthy talks, utilize landlines whenever you can.

Maintain a healthy diet: Avoid processed meats, excessive red meat, and trans fats, which can raise inflammation and cancer risk. Consume fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants, such as leafy greens, berries, and carrots. Include whole grains, nuts, and omega-3 fatty acids to promote brain health.

Maintain physical activity: Regular exercise can decrease inflammation and support immune function, both of which may help lower the risk of cancer.

Minimize prolonged exposure to pesticides, industrial solvents, heavy metals, and formaldehyde, particularly in workplace contexts. If you work in high-risk areas, use personal protective equipment (PPE).

Don't smoke and limit alcohol: Smoking is associated with several cancers and may promote brain tumor growth. Excessive alcohol use can indirectly raise the risk of cancer and impair brain function.
