Is Your Hair Fall Normal? A Dermatologist Explains What’s Expected
5 months ago | 5 Views
It can be frightening to see strands of hair in your pillow, in the shower, or trapped in your comb. However, is it actually worth being concerned? The majority of individuals are unsure about what constitutes normal hair loss. In her Instagram post from June 13, dermatologist Dr. Ananya Sharma discusses how much hair loss is considered normal on a daily basis and when it may be a sign of an underlying problem.
What is considered a typical amount of hair loss?
Ananya advises that you shouldn't be alarmed if you lose 100 to 200 strands of hair every day because it's a regular part of your body's natural cycle. She says that your scalp doesn't retain the same hair strands for your entire life.
"Hair follows a continuous cycle of anagen (growth phase), catagen (transition phase), telogen (resting phase), exogen (shedding phase), kenogen (empty follicle), and then back to anagen." She estimates that you have approximately 100,000 hair shafts on your scalp, with 10–15% of them falling out at any moment. Therefore, having free hair in your brush or after a shower is not always cause for alarm.
What gives the impression that you are losing more than you really are? "Longer hair gives the impression of greater hair fall, a single strand twists and turns, giving the impression of a clump," explains Ananya. Strands that have already fallen out but are tangled, as well as those that are about to fall out, are included in post-wash hair loss. Re-comb your hair in six to seven hours to see the difference.
What causes hair loss to seem worse than it is?
In addition to exposing deceptive beauty marketing, she claims, "The hair care industry is doing EVERYTHING to make you think ANY hair fall is abnormal. The race for 'minoxidil-free' trends has unfairly demonized minoxidil, which was once the go-to treatment for patterned hair loss." In all honesty, I didn't notice nearly as many individuals whining about hair loss five years ago. I think it has a lot to do with the industry boom.
And last, some counsel for people who are thinking about a fast fix: "If you think your hair fall is excessive, please consult a dermatologist." Avoid wasting money on 'bundles' from applications that prioritize advertising over science. Before speaking with the dermatologists she works for, my cook didi paid for one of them with half of her income! (In her defense, we don't dress like doctors at home.)
