The risk factors for gestational diabetes were listed by the gynecologist as follows:

  • Age is over 35.

  • Diabetes runs in the family.
  • In previous pregnancies, there was a history of big babies or GDM.

The following are ten environmentally friendly strategies for reducing the likelihood of developing gestational diabetes:

1. Have little meals every 3–4 hours

Consistent eating helps maintain blood sugar levels, but skipping meals causes blood sugar to spike.

2. Replace white carbs with whole grains

Instead of maida and white rice, opt for oats, millets, brown rice, or whole wheat.

3. Include protein in every meal

It delays sugar absorption and contains paneer, eggs, lentils, curd, and tofu.

4. Take a 20–30 minute walk every day

Particularly after meals, it promotes the natural reduction of sugar levels.

5. Stay away from sugary foods and beverages

Avoid sugary tea, packaged juice, and sweets. Instead, try fruit, coconut water, or nuts.

6. Give priority to foods high in fiber

Fruits with skin, veggies, entire dals; fiber aids in avoiding sugar spikes.

7. Keep portion sizes in check

Excessive eating, even of nutritious foods, can raise blood sugar levels.

8. Have a good night's sleep for seven to eight hours

Insulin resistance rises due to insufficient sleep.

9. Control your stress every day

Try walking, light yoga, or deep breathing. Stress hormones have an impact on blood sugar.

10. Keep an eye on your weight gain with your doctor

A healthy weight gain increases the likelihood of a healthy pregnancy and reduces the risk of gestational diabetes.

"GDM acts as a silent threat, often undiagnosed or underestimated, exacerbating conditions such as hypertension, infections, and cardiovascular issues, which may ultimately lead to fatal outcomes," Dr. Shubhashree Patil, a diabetologist and physician at the Diabetes & Wellness Clinic in Mumbai, said in a previous interview with HT Lifestyle.
