Expert Explains on Oprah: How Your Phone in Bed Might Be Ruining Your Peace

Resist the temptation to check your phone right after waking up in the morning! You may have also heard many wellness professionals emphasize the value of this specific practice, as your parents have informed you. But have you ever questioned the cause?
Mel Robbins, a behavioral change specialist and author, emphasized the value of not sleeping with your phone while on Oprah Winfrey's program, The Oprah Podcast. She recommended that people "never, ever sleep with their phone" and instead keep it in the restroom. Why? Let's see.
You should never sleep with your phone, and here's why.
"I'm not even going to mention all the research about how the phone in the room next to you disrupts your sleep," Mel told Oprah. "I'm going to discuss something that occurs when you wake up."
She described how having the phone next to you while you sleep is bad for your mind and peace of mind. "So, the phone is next to you, right? You are in bed. You answer the phone as soon as the alarm rings. You're here. You've only let a thousand strangers and the global news into your bedroom on Instagram, and you're not even vertical yet. You find yourself wondering why you're so worn out and stressed as you read your emails and text messages. You've already filled your head with all this other information before you've even gotten out of bed, making you the last item on the list.
What happens when you pick up the phone
The specialist said that scrolling when you wake up triggers your stress reaction. It also makes you feel anxious and takes you longer to get out of bed. What causes that? It activates the stored trauma in your mind.
"Anxiety is higher for people in the morning," Mel said. You had a tumultuous childhood if you were raised in a traumatic family or suffered abuse, poverty, intolerance, or racism. A sign of kept trauma is when you wake up in the morning and the first sensation you feel is worry. This is the reason why so many individuals experience anxiety first thing in the morning. It is kept trauma.”
