Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a major health concern that can affect both the mother and child during and after pregnancy. In pregnancy, a diagnosis of hypertension might have a significant impact on the mother and child.
The danger of pregnancy that nobody discusses until it's too late
"In today's world where lifestyle diseases are on the rise, we are seeing more patients with pregnancy and high blood pressure," said Dr Madhu Goel, Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Fortis La Femme in Delhi's GK. High blood pressure is defined as having a blood pressure of 140/90 or higher on two or more occasions, with at least six hours between each measurement.
"The high blood pressure may be pre-existing, meaning it was already high when the pregnancy occurred, or it may be pregnancy-induced blood pressure, which occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy," she said.

"High blood pressure can affect both the mother and the child," Dr. Madhu Goel explained. Preclampsia, in which elevated blood pressure is accompanied by some organ injury, may result. More alarmingly, it can induce eclampsia, in which the patient may have seizures, as well as HELLP syndrome, which is defined by hemolysis, high liver enzymes, and a low platelet count. It may lead to post-partum haemorrhage, which is excessive bleeding after delivery that might be hard to control.
The specialist claims that maternal death can occasionally result from untreated high blood pressure and its consequences. "It may also affect the infant," she said. It might result in a low birth weight or tiny for gestational age baby because the blood supply to the infant may be reduced. The cause of premature babies, that is delivery before time, may be that the treatment for this is delivery.

Doctor's advise to stay safe
Managing high blood pressure depends on early identification. "Regular pregnancy checks are essential," Dr. Madhu Goel advised. The blood pressure should be measured accurately at every appointment. These medications should be taken on time and regularly if necessary. In these instances, blood pressure may be monitored at home, and if it continues to be high, you should call your physician.
"At some point delivery will be advised and this should be done in adequately equipped hospital with good nursery facilities," she said in conclusion. Low-dose Ecosprin is currently initiated before 16 weeks for women at high risk of developing hypertension during pregnancy. Because this has been proven to avoid related issues, be cautious of this terrible condition and take any necessary precautions for a joyful and healthy delivery.
