Covid-19 Returns: 5 Simple Habits to Keep You Safe

The virus that causes Covid-19, SARS-CoV-2, is now considered by experts to have shifted to a cyclical pattern, similar to the seasonal flu. This indicates that the newest Omicron sub-variants, such JN.1, NB.1.8.1, LF.7, and XFC, which are now circulating, may cause flare-ups.

Is this just another flu season now?

With 2,053 active cases and 96 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, Kerala is back at the top of the list in India. Delhi, West Bengal, and Gujarat come next, with Delhi recording 37 new cases, albeit its overall caseload fell somewhat, from 728 to 691.

But the silver lining is that 783 people have recovered or been released, which is indicative of the generally moderate severity of the existing infections. Although the novel variations of the coronavirus are more transmissible, they mostly cause minor, flu-like symptoms.

Experts recommend that the flu shot must be taken annually to protect against it, more so this year since the symptoms are very similar to Covid-19.

These strains are currently included on the World Health Organization's "Variants Under Monitoring" list, which is basically a digital yellow flag advising prudence, but they are not yet classified as "variants of concern."

What steps may be taken right now to stop the spread of COVID-19?

In terms of health, we are better prepared, both mentally and physically, to deal with them. Dr. Preeti Kabra, Senior Chief of Lab at Neuberg Diagnostics, told an Lifestyle Magazine in an interview that even in a post-pandemic environment, a few sensible measures may still make a big difference.

She said –

1. Use a mask in crowded, poorly ventilated indoor areas, particularly during the flu and travel seasons.

2. Refrain from touching your face and wash your hands often.

3. If you are sick, stay home and isolate yourself to prevent infecting others.

4. If symptoms persist, even if they are minor, promote regular testing.

5. Keep current with Covid-19 boosters, particularly if you're at risk.

Prophylactic medications may still be taken into consideration under medical supervision for those with weakened immune systems.

Experts say that measures put in place to fend off the coronavirus — mask wearing, social distancing and virtual schooling — were a big factor in preventing a “twindemic” of flu and Covid-19.

"Although Covid-19 may no longer be in the news, it is still a part of our health landscape," Dr. Preeti Kabra said in conclusion. The good news is that we have the expertise, tools, and experience to handle it well. What counts right now is vigilance, not fear; awareness, not arrogance. If you are unsure, get a test, wear a mask, and speak with your physician."
