Colon Cancer Prevention: 8 Foods a Gastroenterologist Suggests

5 months ago | 5 Views

The colon is the first and longest segment of the large intestine, which is the last section of our digestive tract and aids in food breakdown for the body to utilize. Polyps in the inner lining of your colon can lead to colon cancer. More people are surviving colon cancer thanks to screening tests and modern therapies. But prevention is always preferable to treatment.

In a post uploaded on July 6, Dr. Joseph Salhab, MD (gastroenterology), listed eight foods he consumes to prevent colon cancer. He stressed that eating these foods can reduce the chance of getting colon cancer. Some of the foods he recommended include citrus fruits, apples, kiwi, watermelon, tree nuts, yogurt, tomatoes, avocados, and tomato salsa.

Foods that may reduce the risk of colon cancer

The gastroenterologist advised eight items to lower the risk of colon cancer, but he cautioned that reducing your risk is not the same as getting rid of it altogether. "Diet should always be talked about because we know that people with healthier diets have a lower risk of chronic disease, but it never replaces medical therapy or evaluation," he warned.

Let's examine the list of foods recommended by the gastroenterologist:

1. Yoghurt

According to a thorough review and meta-analysis, eating yogurt reduced the risk of colorectal cancer by 7%.

2. Nuts from Trees

A 42% decrease in the chance of recurrence of the illness and a 57% reduction in mortality were seen among stage III colon cancer patients who ate two or more tree nut meals each week. The findings, according to Dr Salhab, were from a 2018 research. Find out more about it here.

3. Citrus Fruits

The gastroenterologist said that studies indicate a 18% reduction in the risk of colorectal cancer is linked to a high consumption of citrus fruits.

4. Apples

According to a case-control study, daily consumption of more than one serving of apples was linked to a 47% lower risk of colorectal cancer.

5. Kiwi

A literature review revealed that kiwi fruit intake may have anticancer properties that help reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by improving bowel motions and boosting the quantity of lactic acid bacteria in the intestine.

6 Watermelon

According to a 2023 meta-analysis, consuming more watermelon resulted in a 26% lower chance of developing colorectal cancer when compared to consuming less watermelon.

7. Tomatoes (from Salsa)

Dr. Salhab advised consuming tomatoes in salsa in order to reduce the chance of developing colon cancer. The main antioxidant in tomatoes, dietary lycopene, was shown in a meta-analysis to have a protective effect against cancers of the digestive system, he said.

8. Avocado

In males, greater avocado intake was linked to a 21% reduced chance of developing colorectal cancer, according to a sizable prospective study.
