5 Brushing Mistakes Dentists Warn Against—And Why You Shouldn’t Skip Your Tongue
6 months ago | 5 Views
We seldom give brushing our teeth a second thought because it's one of those mundane things we do every day. Still, many of us are unknowingly making errors that put our oral health at risk. To avoid cavities, gum disease, foul breath, and other problems, it's not enough to brush your teeth twice daily.
Dr. Kesha Ramolia Patel, a pediatric and preventive dentist (pedodontist) and the founder of Dental Wellness, spoke with an Lifestyle Magazine about the most typical brushing errors and how to fix them.
1. Insufficient tooth brushing time
The majority of individuals only brush their teeth for 45 seconds, which is insufficient, despite the fact that the dentist recommends doing so for two minutes. If your toothpaste contains fluoride for less than two minutes, it will not be able to bind to the enamel of your teeth.
2. Applying a toothbrush with hard bristles
An overly stiff toothbrush can be uncomfortable and result in the loss of gum tissue and enamel, which makes gums and teeth more sensitive. Pick only bristles that are extremely soft or mild.

3. Not brushing your tongue
If you don't brush your tongue, the bad breath-causing bacteria may continue to live in your mouth. Use a tongue cleaner every time you brush, or get a toothbrush with a tongue scraper on the other side, to prevent this.
4. using the same toothbrush for too long
Using the same toothbrush for an excessive amount of time or switching it out just twice a year, which is not the best practice, is common among people. With time, food particles and germs begin to accumulate on your toothbrush, rendering it less effective and less hygienic. To keep your mouth clean and prevent bacteria, remember to replace your toothbrush every three months.
5. Using incorrect brushing methods
If you are using a conventional manual toothbrush, position it at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use little back-and-forth motions. Make sure to clean every surface of your teeth, including the inside, outside, and chewing surfaces. If you are using an electric brush, just hold the brush head on each tooth for a few seconds and slowly move it to the inner, outer, and chewing surfaces.

Recommendations for a better brushing regimen:
- The idea that using more force and brushing for extended periods of time results in cleaner teeth is a misconception. It can cause tooth sensitivity in addition to harming your gums and tooth enamel.
- Use a head size that is comfortable in your mouth and always use soft bristles.
- According to the ADA (American Dental Association), you should brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes each time.
