Christopher Brown Robinson was born in West Palm Beach, Florida, on November 5, 1938. He spent his first few years in Hollywood modestly. He made an uncredited appearance in The Midnight Story (1957) when he was only 19. He was already appearing in B-movies by the time he was in his twenties, such as Beast From Haunted Cave (1959), where he not only played the lead role but also created the monster costume.

He gained a lot of screen time in the 1960s. In Birdman of Alcatraz and The Young Savages, John Frankenheimer held his own against Burt Lancaster.
