Challenging Stereotypes in Cinema

At a recent press conference in Mumbai for his upcoming film Mirai, Telugu actor Teja Sajja addressed critics questioning his choice of roles in religious-themed films. With confidence and clarity, he highlighted the inconsistency in how the industry perceives different genres. “Why don’t people ask other actors why they keep doing romantic films repeatedly?” he questioned. “When we showcase our Dharma, we should be proud. This is our land, and we’re telling stories rooted in our culture.”

Sajja’s bold response sheds light on a broader issue: the selective scrutiny faced by actors who choose to explore religious or cultural narratives. His remarks call for a more equitable lens through which all cinematic choices are viewed, urging audiences and critics to embrace diversity in storytelling.

The Vision Behind Mirai and Hanu-Man

Sajja’s latest project, Mirai (also known as Mirāi: Super Yodha), directed by Karthik Gattamneni, is set to hit theaters on September 12, 2025. Produced by TG Vishwa Prasad and Krithi Prasad under People Media Factory, the film blends fantasy, action, and adventure. It boasts an impressive cast, including Manchu Manoj, Ritika Nayak, Shriya Saran, Jagapathi Babu, and Jayaram. During the press conference, Sajja clarified that Mirai is not solely a religious film. “The trailer is just over three minutes, and only ten seconds feature Lord Rama’s darshan,” he explained. “This is a story packed with fantasy, action, and adventure, yet the focus seems to fall on those few seconds.”

Sajja drew parallels with his previous blockbuster, Hanu-Man (2024), which also faced similar questions despite being a superhero film with a cultural twist. “In Hanu-Man, I had a sister, bringing a unique emotional layer. We’re weaving morals and connections to our history in a way that resonates with the younger generation,” he said. His approach reflects a commitment to blending tradition with modern storytelling, making cultural narratives accessible and engaging.

Redefining Storytelling for the Next Generation

Sajja emphasized the importance of presenting India’s rich history and values in a “cool” and relatable way. “We’re not just making films; we’re sharing our heritage with pride,” he stated. By incorporating elements of Itihas (historical and mythological narratives) into mainstream cinema, Sajja and his team aim to inspire younger audiences to connect with their roots while enjoying high-energy, contemporary stories.

This approach has proven successful, as evidenced by Hanu-Man’s massive box office success, which solidified Sajja’s position as a rising star in Telugu cinema. His ability to balance commercial appeal with meaningful storytelling sets him apart in an industry often driven by formulaic trends.

A Call for Open-Minded Appreciation

Teja Sajja’s defense of his role choices is a reminder that storytelling should be celebrated in all its forms. Whether it’s romance, action, or culturally rooted narratives, every genre deserves equal respect. As Mirai prepares for its release, Sajja’s words resonate: “Be happy that we’re telling our history in a way that’s exciting for the youth.” His vision challenges the industry to rethink its biases and embrace the power of diverse narratives.
