Almost 40 years after St. Elmo's Fire, Rob Lowe revealed that a sequel is in the works, and he is really enthusiastic about the direction it is taking. The 61-year-old verified in a conversation with People that the project, which has been the subject of rumors for years, is back on track. "The script is coming along nicely," he stated, "and we are working on it." He portrayed Billy Hicks in 1985, a rowdy saxophone player who was unable to fully give up his college party lifestyle.

The movie depicted a tight-knit group of pals as they made their way through the strange and confusing period between finishing school and entering real adulthood. It turns out that viewers are still not over it.

The cause for a sequel after forty years is explained by Rob Lowe.

In particular, Lowe thinks that the sequel is justified right now. "It's really legitimate to revisit those characters that continue to mean a lot to people and watch them navigate this chapter of life, because arguably this chapter of life is every bit as interesting and fraught as — 'What do I do when I get out of college?'" he stated.

Joel Schumacher co-wrote and directed the coming-of-age movie. Emilio Estevez played Kirby Keager, a law student and waiter at St. Elmo's Bar; Andrew McCarthy played Kevin Dolenz, a grumpy Washington Post writer and Kirby's roommate; and Demi Moore played Julianna "Jules" Van Patten, an international banker and the party girl of the group. Additionally, the film featured Rob Lowe as William "Billy" Hicks.
