Rajkummar Rao Says He Looks Forward to Meeting Sourav Ganguly Ahead of Biopic Preparation

The legendary Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly will soon be portrayed by Rajkummar Rao. Vikramaditya Motwane will direct the untitled biopic, and the crew has chosen to push back the original schedule from July 2025 to January 2026. This will allow the screenplay more time to grow and the actors more time to get ready.

For his biography, Rajkummar Rao is supported by Sourav Ganguly

In June of this year, Ganguly openly praised Rao, saying that he was "the right person" for the position. In addition, he stated, "I don't believe anyone else can play me better than him." Even if Rao's confidence was probably boosted by the former captain's support, it also heightened the necessity to portray him in a fair and honest manner.

In response to Ganguly's words, Rao said, "It's an extremely challenging role and a big responsibility. I'm nervous, but I will do my best not to let him down. I am relieved to hear that Dada [Ganguly] thinks I can portray him correctly on screen."

The screenplay and timeline are redesigned by Vikramaditya Motwane and his crew

Motwane is currently debating how to conclude the story while respecting Ganguly's remarkable cricketing career and legacy. Rao verified the time shift by stating, "Everybody is taking a lot of care in recreating Dada's life for a theatrical experience. We have postponed the shooting to next year, as we needed some time for the prep. It's a big responsibility to play one of our most iconic heroes in cricket."

Rao plays a former cricketer who is currently a coach in the 2024 film Mr & Mrs Mahi, and he had previously received professional training for the role. However, he believes that this kind of training won't help him play Ganguly in the upcoming movie.

As Rajkummar Rao awaits his meeting with Ganguly, he starts his physical preparation

"Although I know how to play cricket, being a left-handed batter is a completely different ballgame," he observed. "The muscle memory is all about being a right-handed batter. As a result, I require some practice time. I've made a conscious decision to wait until we're in full preparation mode before meeting Dada.

The goal is for the movie to have a theatrical release in December 2026.
