Mumtaz Shares Why She Rejected Yash Chopra’s Marriage Proposal

Mumtaz, a veteran actor, made the most money in the 1970s. With blockbuster films like Do Raaste, Bandhan, Khilona, and many more, she established herself as a leading lady. Mumtaz told Radio Nasha in an interview that she had once received a marriage proposal from Yash Chopra, a filmmaker, but she declined it because she wanted to concentrate on her career.

According to Mumtaz, Yash Chopra was fond of her.

Yash Chopra, according to Mumtaz, used to be very fond of her when he asked her to marry him. At that time, he was working as an assistant for his brother, BR Chopra. He used to love me. I wasn't particularly attractive, but I was sensible, which is why he liked me. He was an assistant, and I was a kid. He very decently and respectfully proposed marriage to me, saying, "Moti Moti, I love you," and I responded, "No, I want to concentrate on work, I wanted to get somewhere."

Mumtaz sings Yash Chopra's praises.

"Bohut hi acche insaan the. Unke jaisa accha insaan aur director bohut kam hai," she continued. "Unka beta Aditya bhi ab accha director hai." It's not that he was hitting on me; rather, he asked me to marry him with great respect. He was a really honorable man. And then I went to their wedding when they got married. We were really close friends (He was a very good person. Few individuals and filmmakers are as wonderful as him. His son Aditya is now a talented director as well. He was a really nice guy, and he asked me to marry him in a very polite manner—not as if he were flirting with me. I even went to his wedding when he later got married.

Mumtaz eventually wed businessman Mayur Madhvani in 1974 and had two children with him. Following her marriage, she took a 13-year hiatus from performing. Mumtaz discussed her return to the industry in a recent interview with Instant Bollywood, making it clear that she has no desire to portray senior characters on film. She said she hasn't been given a position that complements her personality or looks. Mumtaz stated that although she is willing to make a return, it would only be for a role that truly complements her demeanor. She also said that she would only play someone's mother if the role met her expectations.
