Mohit Suri on the Importance of Music: ‘It’s My Screenplay—I Don’t Shoot Until Every Song Is Ready’

With his next movie, Saiyaara, filmmaker Mohit Suri is getting back into the romance genre. A new leading pair, Ahaan Pandey and Aneet Padda, stars in the movie. However, the musical element is just as important to Mohit as the cast. The film's music was written by Tanishk Bagchi, and all four of the songs that have been published are currently trending on YouTube. The director discusses the value of music and the film in an open interview with HT prior to the film's premiere.
The significance of music
Although Mohit has produced films in a variety of genres over his two-decade career, music has been the focal point of each of them. He says, "I have never really created films without music, be it a thriller like Murder 2, a drama like Aashiqui 2, or an action movie like Awarapan. Even a slasher like Ek Villain has music."
But contrary to popular opinion, Mohit says that he is not knowledgeable about music. Everyone thinks I'm good with music, but I'm not. Love songs are all I know. Perhaps I am skilled at it. My goal is to produce movies with music that will still be popular in the future. He informs us that he utilizes music as a screenplay rather than as something that has to be added as garnish..
On Saiyaara
Unlike many other directors, Mohit doesn't think that songs and music should be an afterthought. "Many record their songs after the shoot is finished. However, I won't be able to do that, he continues, saying, "I will not shoot a single day until I have all my songs ready. That's just something I need, especially on a film like Saiyaara."
Mohit claims that good music is "as important as chemistry between the leads" in a love story, and Saiyaara is a love. "The music holds the audience and adds to the emotion. That is important," he says.
Saiara, which is slated to hit theaters on July 18, was produced by Akshaye Widhani under the banner of Yash Raj Films.
