Karan Johar Slams Bollywood’s Copycat Culture: “Everyone’s Chasing Horror Comedies”
5 months ago | 5 Views
In an effort to profit on the audience's enthusiasm and make their own movies work, Karan Johar believes that there are a number of individuals in the film industry who are attempting to replicate a success story. But that won't do. When Karan was asked about the biggest problem now facing Bollywood in an interview with Bollywood Hungama, he responded, "herd mentality," and continued to elaborate on his answer.
What Karan said
"I believe it is everyone struggling to replicate what others are doing," Karan stated during the discussion. All of a sudden, we will see 20 more individuals attempting to emulate Pushpa's success in serving the tier-2 and tier-3 markets with such force. Everyone would want to create historicals if they saw Chhaava working. Everyone, including Stree, aspires to produce horror comedies. They were effective because they were each powerful on their own, and there wasn't any other choice in that genre. The success of those movies depended on a novel concept.
"Cinema is my universe"
"We all need to have individual thoughts that are unique to ourselves," he continued. The other day someone asked me, "Do you have a universe?" I responded, "What do you mean?" They said, "A spy universe or a cop universe." My universe is cinema itself, and I'm here to tell stories, not create worlds. Why not, if there is a universe in that narrative?
Recently, Karan was at the Cannes Film Festival to see the debut of his film Homebound, which was supported by his company Dharma Productions. The movie, which stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, was directed by Neeraj Ghaywan.
