In an uncommon glimpse into his personal life, Johnny Depp describes how he raised his kids with ex-girlfriend Vanessa Paradis in the south of France. The Sunday Times recently spoke with Depp about that period of his life, which he described as the only time he had ever truly felt at home. The former Pirates of the Caribbean star, who is currently 62 years old, seemed moved as he spoke about his children, Lily-Rose Depp and Jack Depp. An image of Lily-Rose, his daughter, whom he had begun painting when she was only 10 years old, stood behind him throughout the interview.

"I never completed it. "She was 10 then, and 25 now," Depp stated. "Time flies by, doesn't it?" I have empty-nest syndrome, he admitted.

Prior to their split in 2012, the actor and French singer Paradis were together for 14 years. They decided to live on an estate close to St. Tropez, which Depp bought in 2001, and raise their children out of the public eye. The family eventually moved to Los Angeles.

Depp reminisced about those early days, saying, "Oh man, my kids growing up in the south of France in their youth?" I was Papa." He had kind words for being a parent. It's impossible to put into words how much I enjoyed being a father. Then, with a dash of humour, he added, "Then, suddenly, Papa was out the window." I was my father. I'm getting old enough for Papa to maybe return, but he was great. I'm going to need someone to address me as "Papa!"

When asked where he now calls "home," Depp replied that he splits his time between the UK and the Bahamas and no longer resides in the United States. Nonetheless, he considered his family's time in France to be his true sense of belonging. “In truth, the first time I felt I had a home was the place in the south of France where Vanessa and I brought up the children. Depp said, "It was the only place I ever felt at home."

Paradis previously stated that she chose France as their home base. "You can only live much more anonymously in the south of France. She told Weekend Knack in 2007, "And that's bliss, especially when the children are still young."
