Johnny Depp Reflects on Marriage to Amber Heard, Calls Himself a ‘Sucker’

In a rare statement, Johnny Depp lately spoke about his previous relationship with Amber Heard. In an interview with The Sunday Times, the 62-year-old actor, who recently shocked children during a trip to a Spanish hospital, opened up about his tumultuous marriage and the contentious defamation trial in 2022.
He wasn't hesitant to refer to himself as a "sucker" when it came to love. They wed in 2015, four years after they first met during the production of The Rum Diary in 2011. But as the Daily Mail article stated, she filed for divorce in 2016, which was completed in 2017.
In Fairfax County, Virginia, where the trial concluded in June 2022, Depp had a lot of backing from supporters both inside and outside the courthouse. He was once in love with Heard, but he was now questioned about how it felt to see the public turn against her.
Depp discusses his relationship with Heard
Regarding their relationship, Depp said, "So, what were my initial dealings with what we call 'love?'" Obviously obtuse. When you're as naive as I am, you may occasionally gaze into someone's eyes and see a sense of sadness or loneliness, which makes you want to help them.
"But no good deed goes unpunished," he went on. Because there are people who will begin to explain to you what that malaise, that annoyance, was in their eyes when you try to love and assist them. It manifests itself in other ways.
"And the interesting thing is that it is merely a sliver of my life I have chosen to explore, because it is my mother and my father," the actor said. Do you understand what I mean?
“I wouldn't say it was a house without love...” Depp said of his childhood, adding, “But it was an intense love and I would not say that myself, or my siblings, or my pop and mom, experienced any great love or bliss.”
His legal dispute with Heard became public when, in response to a 2018 article that labeled him a "wife-beater," he filed a lawsuit against the publisher of The Sun and its editor Dan Wootton. The publisher prevailed in court in 2020. In 2018, Heard wrote an opinion piece for The Washington Post that Depp later sued her for defamation.
During a March appearance in New York City, he reiterated, "And what that means is, if you're a sucker like I am, sometimes you look in a person's eye and see some sadness, some lonely thing and you feel you can help that person."
The trial formally started in April 2022, and Amber filed a countersuit against Depp in 2020. In June of that year, the jury sided with Depp in its judgment.
During his trial, Depp thanks the jury
Following the trial, Depp discussed how he felt. "The jury gave me my life back," he said. "I am genuinely humbled."
In addition, he stated, "It was my responsibility to tell the truth to my children and to everyone who has continued to support me throughout this." Knowing that I have finally finished that makes me feel at peace.
Since then, Amber has relocated to Spain, where she is caring for her three kids. One of her daughters was born through surrogacy in 2021, and she just gave birth to twins.
However, Depp has resumed his acting career. In 2023, he played the lead role in Jeanne du Barry. He also considered how his loved ones deserted him throughout the trial.
"I may be strange, but there are some things that can be relied upon," he said. Furthermore, no one may doubt my fidelity. I spent thirty years with one agent, but she testified in court about how hard I was to deal with.
"That's death by confetti, these fake motherf****** who lie to you, celebrate you, say all sorts of horror behind your back, yet keep the money—that confetti machine going—because what do they want? Dough," he continued.
“There are individuals, and I’m thinking of three, who did me dirty…” said Johnny.
“And, look, I understand people who could not stand up [for me], because the most frightening thing to them was making the right choice," he said, explaining that they had once been close friends. I lived before the #MeToo movement. For MeToo, I was sort of a crash test dummy.
Depp told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview conducted in October 2024 that he doesn't harbor any resentment.
“I can honestly think about all the hit pieces and how everyone was against me right now, and yeah yeah yeah he is off the map … endless stuff.”
"I can recall it all," he continued. Everything was experienced. It was a mix of funny and not so pleasant moments. Some of it was crazy. The fact is that it just existed, and it still does. Thus, it transpired to me. Man, I discovered. You learn something with every experience, regardless of whether you're walking your dog or being handed a snow cone.
“Despite how eccentric I may be, there are some things you can rely on. Additionally, nobody could doubt my allegiance.
Additionally, he said, "Therefore, I have no ill will against anybody." Since hatred necessitates caring, I don't have this enormous reservoir of it. Why bring such baggage?
Depp explores his new endeavor
Depp is currently preparing for a new film, Day Drinker, which will be directed by Marc Webb and will star Javier Botet, Manu Ríos, Madelyn Cline, and Penélope Cruz. It centers around "an enigmatic stranger" who develops an unexpected relationship with a bereaved bartender, according to IMDb.
In a recent image from the film, the actor appeared almost unrecognizable, sporting a beard and graying hair.
"I have no regrets about anything—because, really, what can we do about last week's dinner?" Depp responded to The Sunday Times when asked whether he had any regrets. Nothing at all.
