Heeramandi Pitch: Bhansali’s Bold Move That Stunned Netflix Boss

Undoubtedly one of the best Indian filmmakers, Sanjay Leela Bhansali was restricted to cinema until he chose to try his hand at a web series. We were able to see the splendor of Heeramandi thanks to it. The CEO, though, considered it to be a challenge when Bhansali brought the concept to Netflix. Ted Sarandos's initial response to hearing about Heeramandi from the legend himself was amusing. He stated that...

"Heeramandi felt like a challenge,"

The Netflix CEO said on the podcast that he felt Heeramandi was the filmmaker putting him to the test. "Honestly, it almost felt like a dare — like he was saying, 'I dare you to make this; it's so big,' " Sarandos said on the podcast, remembering how Bhansali flew down to Los Angeles with the screenplay. The prospect of him producing a television program was unheard of since he is a legendary figure in film. I believed he came to us to seek a negative response. With numerous delays and a difficult production process, the creation of Heeramandi marked his first exposure to the world of Bhansali. "To me, Heeramandi is a true reflection of India’s deep, enduring love for cinema," he said, adding that he even remembered the massive sets that were recreated in the old-fashioned way.

An update on the second season of Heeramandi

Since the release of Heeramandi, viewers have been anticipating the show's return for a new season. The producers did announce that there would be a second season of the program, but it is not included in the 2025–2026 release schedule. One would expect delays with the second season as well, considering that it took years for the first one to be released. Therefore, it is difficult to determine if the program is being produced. The last time we heard, it was in pre-production. However, because Bhansali is now preoccupied with his film Love & War, which stars Ranbir Kapoor from 'Rockstar', Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal from URI, it would take longer for Heeramandi season 2 to resume production.

What did Heeramandi cover?

Before the split between India and Pakistan, Heeramandi was mostly a tribute to the culture of the courtesan. Lahore in pre-partition was the setting for the initially intended film series. Since the prohibition, Pakistani performers were replaced in the original cast. With Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha (Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi), Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Sharmin Segal, and Taha Shah Badussha starring in the main roles, Heeramandi was eventually released.
