Richa Chadha is gearing up for the release of her web series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. The actress plays one of the courtesans in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus. Before the show's release on Netflix, Richa recently shed light on preparing for the elaborate dance sequences for the web series. While speaking about the same, the actress credited the SLB creation for putting her back in touch with a classical dance form.

Heeramandi revived Richa Chadha's love for Kathak

In an interview with Mid-Day, Richa Chadha spoke about how Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar revived her love for Kathak. The actress said, "Preparing for the dance sequences in Heeramandi was a labour of love. Months of dedicated practice were essential to ensuring that every step was executed with precision. I am thankful the show put me back in touch with Kathak."

For the uninitiated, the actress learnt the classical dance form under the guidance of Pandit Abhay Shankar Mishra. However, as life took its course, the actress' passion for dance was left behind. She even feared that she lost her dance skills before Heeramandi's shoot. But the actress is now determined to attain a degree in Kathak under the guidance of her mentor.

Richa Chadha on the limited acknowledgement of Kathak in Hindi films

In the same conversation, Richa said actresses from the South often excel in Bharatanatyam. But she is occasionally dismayed by the limited acknowledgement that Kathak receives in the Hindi film industry. Chadha believes the actresses should learn and explore the dance form."It’s often employed as a tool to convey emotions through facial expressions, something we, as actors, often endeavour to master," she added.

Meanwhile, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, also stars Sanjeeda Shaikh, Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Sharmin Segal, Aditi Rao Hydari, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan Suman and Taha Shah Badussha.

The series will premiere on Netflix on May 1, 2024.
