Churuli Controversy: Why Joju George’s Comments Sent Social Media Into Overdrive

5 months ago | 5 Views

One of the best Malayalam actors, Joju George, has established his acting prowess in a number of supporting parts before moving on to starring roles in films like Joseph. The Malayalam actor, though, is now making headlines after he discussed his terrible experiences after starring in Churuli, a film by renowned director Lijo Jose Pellissery. Joju George has leveled harsh criticism that has been trending on social media for the last few days, ranging from not getting paid to breaking their promises to him. Let's take a closer look at the Churuli dispute involving Joju George.

Joju George's thoughts on Lijo Jose Pellissery's Churuli

Among the new generation of Malayalam filmmakers, Lijo Jose Pellissery is regarded as one of the auteurs. His films are distinguished from the norm because of his unique approach to filmmaking. Churuli, a 2021 Malayalam movie directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery and starring Joju George, Vinay Forrt, and Chemban Vinod Jose, is the subject of the controversy.

In a recent interview with The New Indian Express, Joju George stated that he has not received compensation for his performance in Churuli. Following the assurance that the film will only be shown at film festivals, he added that he employed swear words in it. But the swear-word-filled version of this was shown in theaters, and Joju claimed that the producers should have had the decency to warn him in advance, even if he had to deal with the repercussions.

Malayalam film, which is renowned for producing thought-provoking movies regularly, has a high regard for both Joju George and Lijo Jose Pellissery. The fact that a well-known performer would publicly make such an accusation against a director of Lijo Jose Pellissery's caliber is, to say the least, shocking. It doesn't reflect well on Lijo Jose Pellissery, whose 2019 film Jallikattu was chosen as India's official entry for the esteemed Oscars, if Joju's claims about not being paid are accurate and the filmmakers broke their word.

The controversy is still dominating the news and generating online debate, but neither Pellissery nor Joju have made any public statement regarding it since the interview. In addition to his recent appearance in Kamal Haasan's Thug Life, Joju George has also helmed a movie titled Pani.

Where to watch Churuli on OTT

On SonyLiv via OTTplay Premium, Churuli is available to stream in several languages, including Hindi and Telugu.

Chururli's plot revolves around two undercover cops who travel to a distant town in search of a perpetrator. When the jeep, driven by the officers, crosses a stream, the conduct of their fellow passengers changes. In Churuli, everyone seems to be aggressive, and using profanity is commonplace. The police are caught in the maze of Churuli.
