The well-known song Rukmani Rukmani from Roja was translated into Hindi by the vocalist Baba Sehgal in collaboration with AR Rahman. In a recent interview, he said that he disliked the lyrics of the song.

AR Rahman wrote the song for Mani Ratnam's 1992 film.

Baba Sehgal discloses

Baba Sehgal reflected on the period when he was offered the Hindi version of the Tamil song during a concert in Chennai during an interview with Siddharth Kannan.

He revealed that a deputy director showed up and performed the Tamil version of Rukmani Rukmani. However, he paid little mind to it and simply responded with a "yes" to the music. Rahman, along with his crew, came to Baba's hotel and asked him to help release the song, Baba said. He said that at the request of some of his pals, he assisted the team in contacting them and performing the Hindi version.

“When I saw the Hindi lyrics, I was like, ‘Kitne vahiyat lyrics hai yaar. Kisne likha hai ye?’” (How cheap are these lyrics? Who wrote this?) he remarked. The issue is that music in another language sounds okay to us. However, we understand the meaning in our own tongue. Rahman and Ratnam were probably unaware of the meaning of those Hindi lyrics.

Baba also discussed the reason why he only ever worked with AR Rahman on that song. "It was a forced thing. I wasn't persuaded by the lyrics at all. In my opinion, they were quite inexpensive. A different woman was brought in to perform the female lines. Later, I asked Swetha Shetty to sing those as well, and she performed flawlessly. With Rahman, that was my first and only song. There was a language barrier. He said, "We didn't see each other again after that."

With his 1992 hit Thanda Thanda Pani, Baba Sehgal is credited for bringing rap to India. Trained as an electrical engineer, Baba Sehgal rose to prominence in the early 1990s as a rapper. The rise of MTV during those years had a lot to do with his ascent. He published a number of songs throughout the years that made their way into people's party playlists. He also acted in movies later in his career. He often posts a wide range of videos about music and songs on social media.
