Deity: Goddess Kamakshi

The presiding deity, Shri Kamakshi Devi, is a powerful and benevolent form of the Mother Goddess, symbolizing love, wisdom, and strength. "Kamakshi" literally translates to "She whose eyes are full of desire," reflecting the goddess’s role as a compassionate mother and destroyer of evil. In Goa, she is revered as the kuladevi (family deity) by many Konkani-speaking Hindus.

The idol in the sanctum is adorned with traditional Goan jewelry and vibrant saris, emphasizing her maternal and divine aura.

Historical Significance

The original Shri Kamakshi Temple was located in Kavlem, Ponda, but it was relocated to Shiroda during the 16th century Portuguese Inquisition, a period when many Hindu temples in Goa were destroyed or converted. Devotees secretly transported the idol to preserve its sanctity, and the new temple was established in Shiroda, which became a prominent center of worship.

The current structure reflects a blend of ancient Konkan temple architecture and later Maratha influences, showcasing intricate wooden carvings, a grand sabha mandap (assembly hall), and a beautiful deepastambha (lamp tower).
