The sacred month of Shravan, also known as Sawan, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva, has tremendous significance in the Hindu calendar. During this holy time, devotees practice Sawan Somwar Vrat, which involves fasting on Mondays in order to ask for Lord Shiva's blessings for joy, wealth, and spiritual health.

These Mondays, known as Shravan Somwars, are thought to be particularly sacred for making prayers, chanting mantras, and observing fasts in devotion to Mahadev.

What day and hour is Sawan Somwar in 2025?

The second Sawan Somwar will take place on Monday, July 21, in 2025. The Ekadashi tithi begins at 12:12 PM on July 20 and ends at 9:38 AM on July 21.

The holy month of Shravan, known as Sawan in North India, is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Significance of Sawan Somwar

Worshiping Lord Shiva during this sacred month is thought to bring His blessings in a timely manner, making Sawan Somwar a highly spiritual day. It is believed that fasting on Mondays throughout Shravan might help purify past sins, make wishes come true, and foster harmony in marriage. Additionally, many devotees start the Solah Somwar Vrat (fasting for 16 straight Mondays) on the first Monday of Sawan.

This month is widely known as Sawan in North India and Shravan Masa in South India. The 15-day gap between the start of Shravan between the northern and southern regions is caused by the variation in the lunar calendars, Purnimanta and Amanta.

The ceremonies for Sawan Somwar in 2025

Early morning showers and wearing tidy, preferably white, clothing mark the start of the day. As part of the puja, worshippers then present the Shivling with holy objects like Gangajal, milk, honey, and Bilva leaves. Reciting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra or "Om Namah Shivaya" 108 times is thought to be extremely fortunate.

The Sawan Somwar Vrat is observed by many people, who fast all day or just eat fruits and milk. To celebrate the day with devotion and prayers, devotees also go to Shiva temples to take part in evening aarti and conduct abhishek ceremonies.
