When is Ashura? Is it on July 6 or 7, 2025?
Muharram started on Friday, June 27, in 2025. Ashura is celebrated on the 10th of Muharram. As a result, this year it occurs on Sunday, July 6.
According to the Masjid-e-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee in India, the crescent Moon was seen on June 26. For this reason, June 27 marked the beginning of the first day of Muharram-Ul-Haram. All offices and banks in the public and private sectors will be closed on Ashura, as it occurs on a Sunday.

Muharram 2025: What is Ashura? History, significance of the Islamic New Year
The first day of Muharram marks the start of the Islamic New Year, sometimes known as the Arabic New Year or Al Hijri. Although the month is a time for reflection, many Muslims celebrate Ashura, the tenth day of the month, by mourning the martyrdom of Hussain Ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who died in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. Islamic history regards this conflict as extremely important politically and religiously.
For both Sunni and Shia Muslims, Muharram has historical significance. The war occurred throughout Yazid I's reign. Because of Yazid's unfair administration, Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, refused to swear allegiance. At Karbala, Hussein and his tiny band were intercepted while traveling to Kufa. They were brutally murdered on Ashura, outnumbered by a large margin, and deprived of water. Imam Hussein was martyred for defending Islamic ideals and fairness.
The Islamic year begins with Muharram, a holy month of prayer and contemplation during which conflict is prohibited. It also signifies grief for Imam Hussein's martyrdom, representing the fundamental principles of justice, sacrifice, and resistance to tyranny that Muslims hold dear during this spiritually important time.
