The monsoon season is here, and along with it comes a wonderful sensory experience that includes the fragrance of the earth, the rhythmic drumming of rain, the calming breeze, and the improved clarity of the environment after a shower. Your senses are completely involved in this comprehensive sensory experience. This season, you can create this serene monsoon atmosphere in your house using clever interior design and decorating techniques.

Interior designer Misbah Kapadia, the founder and curator of Design Konstruct, spoke with HT Lifestyle about how to replicate the monsoon season's sensory experience inside your home.

"The monsoon has a profound sense of solace," she remarked. The rain on the windows, the aroma of damp soil, the hazy light that softens everything it touches, it is a season that appeals to the senses. In my opinion as an interior designer, homes should do the same. The aesthetic of a room is only one aspect of design; the overall atmosphere is also important. The ideal time to design interiors that are cozy, textured, and appealing to the senses is during the rainy season, when we spend more time indoors.

Misbah suggested seven methods for bringing the atmosphere of the monsoon into your house:

1. Use windows to bring the outside world inside

When possible, open windows. Nature's own playlist includes the wind, the petrichor, and the faraway thunder. Use sheer curtains made of soft cotton or linen to frame your windows. Their movement and light capture are exquisite.

2. This season, texture matters more than anything

Tactile comfort is essential during the monsoon. I recommend layering the room with rugs that ground the space, cushions made of jute or velvet, and handwoven throws. Consider it as giving your room a warm embrace.

I really like experimenting with muddy browns, dark greens, slate greys, and touches of turmeric or rust this season. The weather outside is mirrored by these colors, which include wet leaves, gloomy earth, and hazy skies. They give a place the impression that it is connected to the outside world.

4. The season's fragrance

Smell is an unspoken narrative. During the monsoon, I stay away from overly sweet scents and instead suggest the basic aroma of clean linen, lemongrass, vetiver, or sandalwood. The atmosphere of a room can be transformed by lighting a stick of incense or arranging fresh eucalyptus in a vase.

5. Illumination with purpose

To foster intimacy, I suggest warm lighting, dimmers, and candles since natural light is frequently lacking. A room doesn't have to be bright; it has to shine.

6. Maintain a relaxed attitude

Dehumidifiers keep your interiors fresh, keeping sticky, humid sensation away.

Dampness can result from monsoon. Clients are always reminded by me to use dehumidifiers as needed, let furniture breathe, and stay away from thick upholstery that may hold moisture. Not only do lighter materials appear fresh, but they also dry rapidly.

7. Celebrate slowness

That the monsoon causes us to slow down is a blessing. I'll recommend creating reading areas with a soft chair, a side lamp, and a view of the rain. Such locations transform into tiny sanctuaries.
