10 Years Strong: Hyundai Creta Crosses 12 Lakh Sales Milestone in India

The Hyundai Creta, which was first introduced in the Indian market in July 2015, has been there for ten years. Over the last ten years, it has gone from being a newcomer in the mid-size SUV market to a model that is constantly compared in terms of volume sales and market share. Its performance also reflects broader changes in consumer tastes, feature expectations, and the evolution of the SUV market in India.

In India, the ten years of the Creta coincided with the shift of the SUV body style from a niche market to a mass market. In the mid-size SUV market, the rivalry grew from two models in 2015 to more than a dozen models by 2025. However, since its debut, the Creta has consistently been at the top of the market in terms of sales for each completed year.

Hyundai Creta: Market footprint and sales expansion

According to Hyundai Motor India, the Creta has sold over 1.2 million units in the local market. Its sales increased from 92,926 units in 2016 to 1,86,919 units per year in 2024. The model outsold SUVs in India between January and June 2025, and it led overall vehicle sales across all categories for three of those six months.

In terms of market share, internal industry data cited by the corporation indicated that the Creta now held over 31% of the mid-size SUV sector. The rising proportion of first-time purchasers, which rose from 12% in 2020 to 29% in 2024, is another sign of its changing customer base. However, in the first half of 2025, sunroof-equipped models made up about 70% of sales, indicating a shift in the segment toward more feature-rich models.

The Creta's steady performance coincides with a dramatic shift in customer tastes in mid-size SUVs. According to the business, customers are more receptive to features such as panoramic sunroofs, connected technology, and a variety of powertrains. With competitors providing viable alternatives at various price points, the sector itself is more crowded.

Worldwide coverage

With 2.87 lakh units shipped from India so far, the Creta is also exported to over 13 nations outside of the home market. At the moment, the model has electric, diesel, petrol, and turbo-petrol engines, as well as manual and automated transmissions.
