Wimbledon Apologises to Pavlyuchenkova After ‘Stolen Game’ Sparks Uproar

July 7, India Following a contentious umpiring choice in her fourth-round match, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was noticeably upset by a technical breakdown in Wimbledon's line-calling system.
On Center Court, the Russian celebrity was engaged in a heated struggle with Sonay Kartal, the local favorite. The game appeared ready for a thrilling first-set tie-break, as both players traded two breaks each.
The drama took place in the ninth game, while Pavlyuchenkova was serving. Kartal's shot landed long, visibly beyond the baseline, as she was on the verge of holding serve after having just saved three break points. But the automated line-call system reacted slowly, sending out a "Stop" call. It took a few seconds for the "Stop" order to arrive, which caused widespread disorientation.
Pavlyuchenkova took a break and waited for an immediate call while standing far back from the baseline. She was on the verge of gaining a 5-4 advantage when the verdict was delayed.
The line-calling crew waited for both players as umpire Nico Helwerth spoke to them on the phone. Everyone was taken aback by the final ruling, even though replays plainly showed Kartal's shot was out: "The system was unable to track the last point, so we will replay it," Helwerth said.

The 34-year-old Russian man was enraged but made an effort to keep his composure. Despite fighting for another game point, she was unable to score. Kartal ultimately seized the lead by breaking serve.
During the shift, Pavlyuchenkova expressed her annoyance: I have no idea if it's in or out. It is impossible to prove. You robbed me of the game. You took the game away from me.
The All England Club subsequently sent an apology, saying: "The players involved have received our apology. We still have total faith in the precision of the ball-tracking system. Nonetheless, we have corrected this human mistake with the appropriate modifications.
Despite the uproar, Pavlyuchenkova displayed tremendous perseverance and ultimately prevailed in the first set with a score of 7-6 (7-3). She disclosed that the chair umpire privately confessed the ball was out after the game.
"It was quite perplexing. The umpire also witnessed it. He didn't, though I had anticipated that he would be proactive because that's what he's there to do. "I don't know if it's because she's local, but that was a pivotal moment," she said.
The occurrence has reignited discussion about the complete reliance on technology for line calls. Emma Raducanu said, "I am skeptical," adding,
"I don't think it's fantastic." The majority of players would concur that there were several questionable calls.
On the other hand, after his own second-round defeat, British No. 1 Jack Draper proclaimed the system to be "100% accurate."
