Will Scott Foster Officiate Game 7 Between Pacers and Thunder? Latest Updates

On Sunday, June 22, NBA referee Scott Foster is highly expected to be selected for Game 7 of the NBA Finals between the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Using a thorough rating system that includes team input, Foster is regarded as one of the league's best referees. He officiated Game 4 in Indianapolis. The way he officiated that contest, which the Thunder won, infuriated Pacers supporters.

Given the way the referee rotation for the Finals has worked out, it makes sense that Foster would be chosen for Game 7, even though the NBA doesn't announce the names of the referees until 9 a.m. ET on the day of the game. He has just officiated one game in the 2025 Finals so far, and he hasn't officiated since Game 4.

Prior to Game 5, Rick Carlisle, the head coach of the Pacers, expressed his support for Foster.

On Sunday, June 15, Carlisle stated, "I believe some of the things I've seen about officiating, especially Scott Foster, are terrible." "I've known Scott Foster for the past 30 years. He's an excellent officer. He's performed admirably throughout the playoffs. We've seen him many times. "It's awful, unjust, unfair, and idiotic the ridiculous level of inspection being conducted out there."

The series will be refereed by 12 officials selected by the NBA

Based on their performance in the previous playoff rounds, the NBA selected 12 referees to officiate the series prior to the start of the Finals.

It's not always the case that referees are expected to officiate two games, but if Foster is selected to officiate Game 7, it won't be a shock. He has officiated 25 championship games, making this his 18th NBA Finals overall. Additionally, he officiated Game 7 of the 2010 Finals (Celtics vs. Lakers) as well as Game 7 of the 2013 Finals (Heat vs. Spurs).

Among the other referees who have only officiated one Finals game this year are Tyler Ford, James Capers, Josh Tiven, Ben Taylor, and Sean Wright. It would make sense for Foster to be accompanied by a group of referees consisting of Capers, Tiven, and perhaps Williams in a Game 7 team. Earlier this month, both Ford and Taylor made their Finals debuts.

The Pacers and Thunder made a total of 71 free throws in Game 4, with the Thunder converting 38 of them. Seventeen crucial plays from that contest were reviewed by the NBA's Last Two-Minute Report, and every one of them was determined to be either a "correct call" or a "correct no-call."

Foster had also served as the referee for another Pacers playoff match earlier this year.

Foster, also known as "The Extender,"

Foster has been given the moniker "The Extender" by certain supporters, who have questioned his judgments in previous playoffs and believe that they contributed to prolonging the series.

Tom Haberstroh, a veteran NBA reporter, mentioned a research that came to the conclusion that there is "not much evidence at all" that Foster truly prolongs the series. The NBA claims that the selection of playoff referees is made "based on their overall performance throughout the first three rounds of the NBA Playoffs 2025. After each round, the NBA Referee Operations management team assessed officials to decide whether they should advance in this year's postseason."

One of the league's best referees is generally agreed to be Foster

Foster entered this year with 1,675 regular season games and 241 playoff games under his belt, making this his 30th season in the NBA. His 25th Finals game was on Friday. He has covered the Finals for 18 years.

In addition to playing pickleball, Foster is well-known for being a passionate player off the court.
