The Dolphins have acquired a new tight end through an unexpected path, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, who reports that Smith was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday.

Darren Waller, a former tight end with the New York Giants, has been acquired by the NFL club. Sports Illustrated reports that the Giants will receive a sixth-round selection in exchange for sending back a contingent seventh-round pick. According to NBC Sports, Waller still belonged to the Giants despite not playing a single game in the 2024 campaign.

Waller, who will be 33 in September, is well-known for his athleticism and for excelling as a pass-catcher throughout his NFL career.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Waller was seeking a one-year, $5 million deal with Miami.

In addition to a contingent 2027 seventh-round selection, the Giants will get a 2026 sixth-round pick from the Dolphins.

According to ESPN, Waller will return to play for the Miami Dolphins next.

At the age of 32, he was regarded as one of the best tight ends in the NFL during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. At that point, led the Las Vegas Raiders in 12 touchdowns and 197 receptions for 2,341 receiving yards.

In 2022, the club gave Waller a three-year, $51 million extension as a reward.

But Waller didn't remain for long and was eventually transferred to the New York Giants the next year. In 2020, he had his finest season of his career, hauling in 107 receptions for 1,196 yards and nine scores.

In 2023, Waller joined the Giants, but he only played in 12 games, recording 52 receptions for 552 yards and one score.

Waller reportedly told people in his inner circle that he "missed football."

Waller declared his retirement in June of last year. The player disclosed that he had difficulties breathing and spent three and a half days in the hospital, unable to move, use the restroom, or eat on his own. He has not revealed the kind of disease he has.

He is indeed joining the Miami Dolphins.

The Giants are receiving a conditional seventh-round selection in 2027 and a sixth-round pick in 2026 from the Miami Dolphins.

He played for the New York Giants, the Baltimore Ravens, and the Las Vegas Raiders.
