WCL 2025: Pakistan Confirms Participation, Likely India Clash Only in Final
4 months ago | 5 Views
Sunday saw the cancellation of the highly anticipated match between the India Champions and the Pakistan Champions at the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 due to public fury. Following the terrorist assault in Pahalgam, social media users consistently expressed their discontent at former Indian cricketers playing a game against Pakistan. The match was scheduled for Sunday, July 20, in Edgbaston, Birmingham. However, the organizers opted to cancel the game in response to widespread public condemnation.
It was unclear if Pakistan would keep playing in the competition after this action. But Kamil Khan, the owner of Pakistan Champions, verified that the T20 competition will proceed as scheduled and that the schedule will remain unchanged.
He also provided a glimpse of what to anticipate when the competition enters its knockout rounds. On August 2, 2025, the T20 tournament will conclude.
If push comes to push, the semi-final match between India and Pakistan will be "avoided," according to Kamil Khan.
Kamil Khan told GeoNews, "The tournament is proceeding according to schedule, there are no changes, and all the remaining matches are happening."
"We're currently stating that if we make it to the semifinals and there will be four teams, we will avoid matches between the two teams," he said, maybe alluding to the opposing sides.
But when asked about what would happen if the two teams advance to the championship game, he chose not to provide further details.
"The judgments regarding the final will be made then if we get there," he stated.
‘We'll get two points’
The owner of Pakistan Champions also asserted that his team would receive two points as a result of the game against the India Champions being called off.
"And as for this game, the two points will be given to us, and we deserve those points according to the rules," he added.
Several former Indian players, including Harbhajan Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, and Shikhar Dhawan, withdrew from the game against Pakistan earlier. Additionally, Dhawan said that he had notified the organizers of his choice on May 11.
The event was ultimately canceled by the organizers due to the high number of pullouts and the public outcry. The WCL organizers issued an official announcement saying that the game between India and Pakistan was scheduled only after word came that the Pakistan hockey squad would be touring India.
The first match of the WCL 2025 event was played last week between the champions of Pakistan and England.
India Champions triumphed in the summit match against Pakistan to win the tournament's first season.
