Following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Kohli, as the Indian cricket team prepares to enter a new era under Shubman Gill, the most pressing issue has become, "Who will be the next Virat Kohli?" The 36-year-old had defended the No. 4 position in Test cricket for 12 years, so his resignation immediately brought up the issue of who would be able to step into his large shoes. Former England cricketer Monty Panesar supported a player who has not yet made his debut, while the majority have supported the new captain for the position.

Sai Sudharsan's selection was one of the most noteworthy inclusions for the next five-match Test series against England. Following his outstanding performance in the previous home season, he dominated the IPL 2025, taking home the Orange Cap. Additionally, his century for Surrey in last year's County Championship demonstrated his proficiency in English weather.

Panesar told Insidesport that Sudharsan should succeed the No. 4 spot in the lineup and become the "next superstar of Indian cricket."

"The squad currently has some truly talented young players. Sai Sudharsan is a Surrey player. He appears to be extremely aggressive and courageous. He has performed well for Surrey and in English conditions. Panesar stated that he believes he might be the next Indian cricket sensation and take over the position that Virat Kohli held at number four.

Earlier, Sudharsan had planned to visit England in the beginning of the trip in order to participate in the second India A match against the England Lions, which would have given him an early start to his tour preparations. His travel was delayed, nevertheless, since the Gujarat Titans, the team he represents in the IPL, advanced to the playoffs. Nevertheless, he arrived in England with the other Indian team members on Saturday, and they had their first practice at Lord's Stadium on Sunday.

On a more general point, Panesar encouraged the Gill-led side to carry Kohli's legacy.

The only thing I want to do is continue Virat Kohli's legacy. "I'd want to see the young Indian Test team play Test cricket the way he did," the ex-spinner continued.
