In stunning fashion, India finally exorcised their Edgbaston demons by defeating England by 336 runs to tie the five-game series 1-1 and win their first-ever Test match at the location. The captain Shubman Gill led from the front with twin centuries (including a double ton), while Akash Deep produced an outstanding ten-wicket match haul in a performance that was marked with authority.
Former captain Virat Kohli was the center of attention at the celebration, and he immediately posted on social media after India secured the historic victory.
"India wins a fantastic victory in Edgbaston. Without fear, he continued to push England against the wall. Superbly guided by Shubman both at the plate and on the field, and everyone contributed significantly. On this surface, Kohli wrote on his official X account, "Special mention to Siraj and Akash for the way they bowled on this pitch."
Ravindra Jadeja's composed 89 and Rishabh Pant's useful 65 provided the support for Gill's 269 in the first innings, which was the highest score ever made by an Indian captain in an international match. As India declared with a massive target of 608 for England in the second innings, Gill came back to blast 161 off only 162 balls.
England's reaction, even if it was somewhat defiant, was never persuasive. In both innings, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep destroyed the top order, with Akash Deep having a greater impact in the second. Akash Deep, who was playing in place of a rested Jasprit Bumrah, made his case with four wickets in the first innings and amazing figures of 6/99 in the second, including the decisive wicket that secured India's 336-run win.
The firing was, in and of itself, poetic: Brydon Carse's one to Shubman Gill, who calmly sat beneath the ball to complete a historic victory that Indian teams had been chasing for 58 years.
Day 5 was dominated
Rain caused the last day to begin late, and severe thunderstorms in Birmingham raised questions about the test's outcome. The ground crew, though, made sure all three sessions could happen by acting swiftly after the rain stopped. The play resumed with Akash Deep making early headway, removing Ollie Pope before Prasidh Krishna captured his first wicket, dismissing Harry Brook.
In the last over before lunch, Washington Sundar brought an end to Ben Stokes' tenacity. With Jamie Smith's dismissal on 88 in the second session, England's chances of surviving were nearly gone.
