Virat Kohli Breaks Silence on Test Retirement: ‘Colouring My Beard Every 4 Days…’
4 months ago | 5 Views
On July 9, 2025, nearly two months after declaring his intention to quit test cricket, the legendary Indian cricketer Virat Kohli discussed the subject for the first time. The who's who of cricket, including the current Indian squad, attended a fundraiser in London that former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh organized for his YouWeCan Foundation. The allusion to beard color was used by Kohli to suggest that it was time for him to end his legendary Test career.
When Gaurav Kapur urged Kohli to join Yuvraj Singh, Ravi Shastri, Kevin Pietersen, Chris Gayle, and Darren Gough onstage, Kohli replied, "I just colored my beard two days ago. You know it's time when you are coloring your beard every four days."
In a lengthy Instagram message, Kohli declared his retirement from Test cricket, a format he supported throughout his career. It's difficult for me to leave this style, but it seems like the correct thing to do. I've given it my all, and in return, it's given me so much more than I could have ever asked for. My heart is overflowing with thankfulness for the game, the folks I played with on the field, and everyone who made me feel seen throughout the journey. I will never forget my Test career with a grin.

At an outstanding average of 46.85 and a strike rate of 55.58, Virat Kohli amassed 9,230 runs over 210 innings throughout his 123 Test career before announcing his retirement. He has scored 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries, with a high of 254, including seven double hundred. The most double centuries by an Indian is his seven. In addition to 30 sixes, Kohli has also hit 1,027 boundaries in Test cricket. In addition to being the first Indian captain to win a Test series in Australia (2018–19), Kohli was a key player in India's international triumphs.
Only five days after skipper Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from red-ball cricket, Kohli made the decision to end his career. Since then, Kohli has refrained from expressing any views on matters related to cricket. By congratulating Shubman Gill, the new India Test captain, on his historic 269-run performance against England in the second Test, he brought the break to a close.
Kohli called Gill a "star boy" and gave the Indian captain his best wishes for the future. Additionally, he rejoiced when India defeated England by 336 runs, leveling the score in the five-game series. Between Novak Djokovic and Alex de Minaur, Kohli and his wife, Anushka Sharma, were also seen at a Wimbledon round of 16 match for the men's singles competition.
Throughout the occasion, Kohli seemed to be in high spirits, chatting with former teammates and even rivals like Kevin Pietersen.
Kohli also discussed the specifics of his relationship with Yuvraj Singh, with whom he shared the 2011 ODI World Cup victory.
"On and off the field, we had a fantastic connection. In Bangalore, I first encountered him at a competition in the Northern Zone. Him, Bhajju pa, and Zaheer Khan took me under their wings when I first began playing for India. They helped me develop as a player and feel at ease in the locker room. Off the field, there were many enjoyable moments, and it helped me understand what it takes to reach the top. For the rest of my days, I will hold these connections dear. It was really unique to see him during the World Cup, and what we learned afterward was a surprise. We were so close to him that we didn't even realize it. Then, when I was in charge of the squad, he battled cancer, and once again, as the champion that he is, he came out on top and rejoined the team.
