Virat Kohli Admits to Jos Buttler: ‘I Don’t Know How to Play’—Opens Up About His Insecurities

"Ek hi toh dil hai Virat Kohli bhai. Kitni baar jeetoge?" is the next sentence that anyone who uses Instagram or social media often is familiar with. When it comes to Virat Kohli, this is far too typical a topic for individuals to discuss. The dude is a legendary figure. He has accomplished nearly every batting milestone in white-ball cricket and is still respected worldwide. However, in 2025, as he approaches the latter stage of his career, Kohli is doing what all great cricketers do: contributing to the sport. More so during the IPL, which is already a hotbed for young talent, Kohli could be seen imparting his expertise to members of the opposing camp at the conclusion of a game. Whoever budding cricketer has shared the field with Kohli should be asked? He only has positive things to say about him.

But did you realize? Kohli doesn't limit his knowledge sharing to just his fellow countrymen. Jos Buttler, Jacob Bethell's England teammate, has jumped on the bandwagon to thank Virat for the same just days after the young Bethell disclosed how Kohli assisted him in Royal Challengers Bengaluru during IPL 2025. Buttler, who plays for the Gujarat Titans, holds the record for the third-most runs scored in a single season of the IPL with 863 runs for the Rajasthan Royals in 2022, behind Kohli (973) and Shubman Gill (890). Buttler had a hard time the following year, and that's when Kohli helped him calm his nerves.

"I had that one season in 2022 when I scored 868 runs. But he holds the record for the most runs in a single season with 973, which is outstanding. In a nutshell, I struggled with the upcoming season because I was asking myself, "How can I top that?" and we were also practicing alongside RCB. I've faced Virat a lot. He's a big rival, but I figured I'd just ask him a few things. He had just completed his batting. The inquiry concerned your expectation management practices. In fact, no player in world cricket is subjected to greater expectations than he is. He was extremely helpful and generous with his time. All he needed to say was, "Maybe you had that one season. Accept that. Don't try and replicate it." It's fine. "But life is going to be good," Buttler told Stuart Broad on the "For the Love of Cricket" podcast.

'He is a human too.'

That was not everything. Kohli shared his personal doubts with the former England captain and showed his weak side to Buttler in order to give Buttler an even better understanding. Kohli typically presents himself as an unflappable alpha male, unconcerned by anything, but as Buttler noted, our KING is just a human being driven by a lot of feelings.

"Then he began discussing some of the doubts he occasionally has about his performance and things like that. How he practices. I was extremely appreciative of his time and thankful for his insights. I mean, this is arguably the best player of our generation, especially in white-ball and ODIs. I was simply astonished by how well he understood my game and my work. He's a human, too. Buttler added, "It's alright if he feels that way as well. Sometimes I pick up the bat and feel like I don't know how to play. I experience that a lot."
