Vengsarkar Rebukes Bumrah for Selective Match Play: ‘National Duty Comes First’

Dilip Vengsarkar, the legendary player who won the World Cup in 1983, criticized Jasprit Bumrah for his workload management as the top bowler gets ready to skip one of the final two Tests against England. Before India traveled to England, head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill had decided that Bumrah would only participate in three of the tour's Tests.

In the Edgbaston Test, which India won decisively, the 31-year-old has already missed it. There is widespread conjecture that Bumrah could also miss the Manchester game, as the initial strategy may have indicated. The squad management, however, may decide to rest him for the fifth Test if India is still down 1-2 at this point, making some last-minute adjustments to the strategy.

When it comes to Jasprit Bumrah's selective participation for workload management, Vengsarkar didn't hold back. He argued forcefully against letting players select games, stating that someone shouldn't be playing at all if they aren't in top condition.

"The most important thing is to play for India, and if you're not in shape, don't play at all." Despite having a break of about 7–8 days following the first Test match, it was still unacceptable that he was left out of the second Test. Dilip Vengsarkar stated in an interview with RevSportz, "Maybe it was acceptable for Agarkar and Gambhir."

"No possibility of choosing games based on personal preference"

Bumrah has made a big difference, taking five wickets in each of the two Tests he has played in this series. A fearless England batting lineup that excels at attacking the opposition is unnerved just by his presence on the field. In the two Tests he participated in, though, India was unable to cross the finish line and is now behind in the series.

He insisted strongly that if a player is healthy and available, he should participate in every game, and he questioned the justice of giving players the option to select matches.

I don't believe that bowlers should get to choose which Test matches they play in. You should represent your nation in every game if you are in good condition and have the time to do so. As a world-class bowler, Bumrah has the ability to win games for India. However, you must participate in every game when you are on tour. He went on to say that choosing matches based on personal preference is not an option.
