USMNT’s Mexico Defeat Revives ‘Is Pulisic Done?’ Debate; Diego Luna Draws Heat

Following their team's defeat against Mexico in the Gold Cup final on Sunday, two USMNT players, Christian Pulisic and Diego Luna, received harsh criticism from supporters on social media. Pulisic, who was absent from the US campaign, was the subject of demands from supporters that the team management "get rid" of him. On the other hand, the majority of the complaints against Luna were brought about by his subpar performance in the NRG Stadium finale.

One supporter posted on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, "Christian Pulisic hope you enjoyed watching some of your teammates lose to the Mexico A-team tonight as you sit at home."

“I hope Christian Pulisic, Tim Weah, Weston McKennie, Flo Balogun, Ricardo Pepi, Yunus Musah, Antonee Robinson, and many others are happy. Perhaps more Americans will take soccer seriously the next time you choose to play, so you won't have an away game in your own nation," said another.

A third admirer tweeted about Luna, saying: "Don't treat Diego Luna like he's the next big thing. He has talent, enthusiasm, and some abilities. However, he is in no way close to pulisic.

Why Christian Pulisic didn't play in the Gold Cup championship game between Mexico and the USMNT

Pulisic, the usual captain of the USMNT, chose to take a break from the Gold Cup after logging more than 3,500 minutes over two seasons with AC Milan, a choice he made in conjunction with US Soccer to give priority to the 2026 World Cup.

The AC Milan star responded to the doubts cast by a number of specialists by saying, "To question my commitment to the national team is way out of line."

As Mexico overcame an early deficit to beat the United States 2-1, Edson Alvarez, on the other hand, scored the game-winning goal in the 77th minute. With its victory in the Gold Cup, Mexico now has 10 titles overall and has won the event twice in a row.

In the fourth minute, Chris Richards scored the opening goal for the United States, but Raul Jimenez equalized in the 27th.

Mexico's tournament-best five set piece goals were scored by Alvarez. The initial four were corner kicks from the outside. A free kick that Johan Vasquez flicked to Alvarez for a diving header was the game-winning play. The play was initially deemed offside, but the judgment was changed after a video review.
