US Open at Oakmont: New Start Time for Final Round After Rain Delay

The play for the US Open golf championship has been stopped due to dangerous weather on Sunday afternoon.

A weather delay is in place at Oakmont Country Club, just outside of Pittsburgh, with the golfers on the course for the final round of the tournament. The PGA Tour said play was stopped due to "dangerous weather."

The driving range has reopened for players to warm back up. The play is expected to resume at 5:40 PM ET.

Play was suspended just after 4 PM ET as rain came pouring down onto the course, forming puddles on the greens. Spectators pulled out umbrellas as golfers played through the initial start of the rainfall, but it became heavier, and officials ultimately decided to blow the horn. Once play stopped, golfers began to leave the course.

Rain was forecast for Sunday as the championship began on Friday under bright, sunny conditions, with temperatures rising to 80 degrees during the first few hours.

Sam Burns was leading the US Open leaderboard at 2 under par through seven holes when play was halted. Adam Scott was in second place, one stroke behind him, at 1 under par. Currently, the two golfers are the only ones below par.

How play advanced prior to the US Open rain delay

Sam Burns started the day four under par and one stroke ahead of Adam Scott, the 2013 Masters champion. The two men fought through seven holes, with the same gap when the storm hit and created puddles on several Oakmont greens.

After missing the green with his approach at the first hole, Scott made a bogey, but Burns made his first three-putt bogey of the week on the second.

After hitting a right bunker off the tee, Scott stumbled to a bogey on the third hole, but responded with a tap-in birdie on the par-five fourth.

The last two players were tied for the lead at two under after Burns made a bogey on the fifth hole, landing in a left bunker off the tee.

Scott three-putted for a bogey on the par-three sixth, and both players parred the seventh before play was stopped with them teeing off at the par-three eighth.

After making bogeys on the second, third, and fifth holes, Norway's Viktor Hovland joined England's Tyrrell Hatton at level par. Tyrrell Hatton was in fourth place with one over after eight holes.

American JJ Spaun, who started the day one behind, stumbled to two-over alongside Mexico's Carlos Ortiz after three straight bogeys to open the round and bogeys at five and six.
