With a stunning solo attack on stage 15, Belgian cyclist Tim Wellens won his first-ever Tour de France stage on Sunday, July 20. On the way to Carcassonne, Wellens overcame the harsh, rolling terrain. According to a Cycling Weekly story, the 34-year-old UAE Team Emirates racer crossed the finish line, with compatriot Victor Campenaerts (Visma-Lease a Bike) coming in second place almost two minutes behind. Tadej Pogacar, Wellens's UAE teammate, followed behind by more than seven minutes.

Wellens has joined the select group of cyclists who have won stages in all three Grand Tours—the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, and Vuelta a España—thanks to this victory, which is a major achievement for him. The seasoned rider, who is renowned for his tenacity, had been waiting a long time for this win.

Team UAE's superiority in the Tour de France 2025

According to another report on France 24, Team UAE has dominated this year's race with five stage wins so far, four of which were won by team captain Tadej Pogacar, who maintained the maillot jaune (yellow jersey) and appeared to be getting closer to winning another overall championship.

"If there is one rider in the Tour de France who deserves victory it is Tim Wellens," UAE team boss Mauro Gianetti told The Guardian. Wellens is committed to the team and to Tadej, Gianetti said.

"Today he (Wellens) was in the break without looking to be in it," Gianetti continued. The first 50 kilometers of the breakaway were quite challenging, but he was able to refrain from working, and the energy he saved in the early stages of the break he gave in the end. As usual, he said, attacking right before the long fall was a smart strategy.

According to Gianetti, Wellens and the rest of the club enjoyed another great day.

Tim Wellens said the win was "special."

In Cycling Weekly, Tim Wellens referred to his victory as a "special victory." He went on to say that everyone wants to compete in the Tour de France, but few actually win in the competition. "It's great for the squad. I was feeling great before the show today, according to Wellens.
