Numerous fans were taken aback by Shreyas Iyer's absence from the Indian Test squad for the current England series. As Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their Test retirements, several people questioned the selectors' choice and thought that a seasoned player like him should have been included in the team.

Former Mumbai opener Sahil Kukreja told Rediff that Iyer is an underappreciated cricketer and that the choice to ignore him is questionable.

"I hope he makes a comeback," said Kukreja, who is currently a member of the Mumbai Cricket Association's Cricket Improvement Committee. He is a fantastic player, but for whatever reason, he doesn't seem to get the rub of the green. This is something that the team management, the coaches, or the selectors need to answer."

After what he has done and what he has achieved, it is shocking that Shreyas Iyer is not included in the Test squad, he said, criticizing the choice. His achievements are amazing, not just as a player but also as a captain. It's really surprising that someone like Shreyas isn't included in the Test squad.

With an average of 68.57 and a strike rate over 90, Iyer hit 480 runs in just seven innings during the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy campaign. This year, he enjoyed his finest IPL season ever, guiding PBKS to its first final in nine years. During his debut season with the team, he was selected as captain after scoring 604 runs in 17 games.

Iyer has played 14 games for India in Test cricket, scoring 811 runs at an average of 36.86 and a strike rate of 63.02. His high score is 105, and he has also hit hundreds and five fifties.
